Home away from home
A walk in & around the School compound.

This half-day excursion allows you to experience Africa on foot. The 8 km walking trail starts within our fenced school compound. There is much to see and understand. A Dutch volunteer, Raoul de Haan, created a book of poetry “Maasai Moments” during his stay with us. Those poems are scattered all around the compound and will transport you into Another World.
You visit the school shamba (organic garden), the healing garden, and the real traditional manjatta (roundhouse of mud and cow dung) and hear how Maasai families lived in earlier days. Included in the program is a conservation act. At our tree nursery department in the school, we cultivate indigenous trees. By choosing this excursion, you also donate two indigenous trees. When those trees are fully grown, they will be replanted in Dupoto Forest, because we care about the land.
We then step outside of the school gates and walk in the footsteps of zebra and giraffes. You learn the various ‘talents’ of the different trees. You learn and will experience the natural toothbrush. Accompanied by birdsong and glimpses of butterflies, you connect with the African bush and experience it on the same level as its animal inhabitants.
It’s really exciting! Through the plains, the forest and savannah grasslands, and bushlands surrounding Oreteti Mara Lodge, you will be guided by “our neighbor the Hippo”. You can take a selfie from a safe distance, as the Maasai say: “Never stand between a hippo and its water”.
